Description

Where is all that blue coming from? Typically, the North American Nebula is presented showing a lot of deep pinks and red colours. I used three narrowband filters, hydrogen-alpha, OIII, and hydrogen beta and assigned the colours according to their spectral wavelengths. Thanks to Tim Hutchison for developing the pixel math formula to allow me to do this in Pixinsight! Generally speaking, hydrogen-beta emits in the blue end of the spectrum and OIII is emitting a green blue colour. Hydrogen-alpha of course is a deep red. These are the real colours of ngc 7000 presented by isolating these three emissions. Broadband RGB stars have been added in after removing the narrowband stars. My new goal is to do a large mosaic of this whole region in Cygnus using this technique.
